Imagine being seven years old and unable to move. You've been staring at the same ceiling tiles for three weeks. The TV is mounted at an angle you can barely see. Your family visits when they can, but most of your day is spent alone with the sound of monitors and the hum of fluorescent lights.
This is reality for thousands of children in hospitals across the country. Kids with spinal injuries, post-surgical patients, children undergoing intensive cancer treatment — many of them physically cannot sit up. Their entire visual world is a rectangle of acoustic ceiling tile.
Wonderlens changes that ceiling into anything. The ocean. A galaxy. A Minecraft world. A video call with their best friend. A movie they've been wanting to see. A game they can play with their eyes and subtle head movements.
These aren't off-the-shelf VR headsets repurposed for hospitals. Wonderlens is being designed from the ground up for pediatric patients — lightweight (under 50g), hypoallergenic, impact-resistant, and compatible with hospital beds, IV lines, and monitoring equipment. The software is purpose-built for children who have limited mobility, with content curated by child life specialists.
The Games For Love Innovation Lab has spent months researching, consulting with child life specialists across 12 facilities, and working with optics engineers to design something that doesn't exist yet: AR glasses purpose-built for pediatric hospital patients. Your donation brings us closer to making that a reality.
