Bring gaming stations to 1,200 kids a year at Yale New Haven.

Gaming specialist Tyler M. and the Yale New Haven child life team need 3 new gaming stations to serve the pediatric oncology, surgical recovery, and long-stay floors. Your donation transforms hospital stays for every kid who passes through those rooms for the next decade.

The Story

At Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, kids face some of the hardest moments of their lives. Extended stays for treatment. Recovery from surgery. Weeks away from friends, school, and everything normal. For these children, a hospital room can feel like the loneliest place in the world.

That's where gaming changes everything. When a child picks up a controller, something shifts. The beeping monitors fade into the background. The IV in their arm becomes invisible. For a few minutes — or a few hours — they're not a patient. They're a hero. A racer. A builder. They're just a kid.

Tyler M.
"We see it every single day. A child who hasn't smiled in a week picks up a controller and suddenly they're laughing. Gaming isn't a luxury for these kids — it's therapeutic. It reduces anxiety, helps manage pain perception, and gives them something to look forward to during treatment."
Tyler M. — Gaming Specialist, Yale New Haven Children's Hospital

Yale New Haven's child life team, led by gaming specialist Tyler M., has identified a critical gap: their pediatric floors need more interactive entertainment stations. The team applied through Games For Love's GFLX program because they've seen firsthand how gaming transforms outcomes — and they need your help to make it permanent.

🔍 What Yale New Haven Specifically Needs

1,200+ kids pass through Yale New Haven's pediatric floors every year. Here's what makes this specific install different from a generic hospital donation.
🏗️
Three permanent installs
Gaming stations on oncology (Floor 7), surgical recovery (Floor 4), and long-stay (Floor 6) — built to last 10+ years.
🧑‍⚕️
Team-managed, not donated
Tyler and his child life team own every station, maintain it, curate content, and measure its impact on the floor's patients.
🎮
Pediatric-grade hardware
Hospital-sanitizable controllers, adaptive input options, ADA-compliant mounting, and games curated for ages 5–18.
📊
Outcome-measured
Yale's child life team tracks anxiety reduction, procedure compliance, and length-of-stay impact and reports back annually.

Yale New Haven Children's Hospital serves southern Connecticut and the surrounding region — many of its patients come from historically underfunded communities where families can't afford a gaming setup at home. For many kids, the hospital stations are the only modern gaming access they'll ever have during their stay.

The hospital has tried ad-hoc solutions — borrowed consoles, aging carts, volunteer-donated games. They don't last. They break. Content gets stale. What Yale needs is a permanent, maintained, measured program — exactly what GFLX delivers.

"Gaming isn't a luxury for these kids. It's therapeutic. I've watched a controller do more for a kid's mood than any medication we give them."

"Oncology is hard. Really hard. A bedside gaming station is the difference between a kid who feels like a patient and a kid who feels like a kid."

Pediatric Oncology Lead
"Anxiety reduction during treatment genuinely impacts recovery. We see the data on our own floor. Gaming stations are a clinical tool."
